UL sheet music priority – updating Britten

In April this year we asked our readers at the UL which uncatalogued items they would prefer us to process as a priority: the results were published on this blog on 20 April, see https://musicb3.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/ul-sheet-music-priority-survey-results/

As you can see, we promised to focus on unprocessed sheet music by Benjamin Britten unprocessed sheet music. There were 34 cards for music editions by Britten in the so-called MONYCs (the charming acronym MONYC stands for “music on order not yet catalogued”), now there are only 19 cards left. Some of these the scores have not come back from binding, for other scores finding them is extremely time-intensive. Just to give you one example: see the scan of a MONYC card below. It is a choral piece, only 3 pages long, so it might be bound with more than 30 items in one of the many bound but uncatalogued volumes; even though normally items are bound in order of surname (from A to Z), in some cases an odd item within a volume might be out of such an order. Anyway, I still haven’t found this one:

So these three pages of music by Britten should be in a volume within the section of M250.b, but I have not managed to locate it in this section yet. (There are about a hundred such volumes of bound, uncatalogued music on our shelves!)

In other cases, there is no information in the top right-hand corner (“Returned Bound”), and we cannot be 100% sure that the date when the copy was received is 100% accurate – as these MONYC cards represent items ordered (including legal deposit claims), the fact that a card exists does not always mean that an item was actually received.

Just to show you the work we have done, I’ll list the 20 copies which are a result of this mini-project. For some works a borrowable copy is now available – which is surely good news. We will look out for the other “Britten-MONYCs” in the coming months.
