Just in case you didn’t follow my advice and tune in to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 last week; I’d better tell you that the winner is a London singer, with a song written by an Icelandic-Swedish song writing trio (Stefan Örn, Sandra Bjurman and Iain Farguhanson), competing with her duet partner for Azerbaijan.
Nigar (“Nikki”) Jamal and Eldar Gasimov won this year’s competition with their song Running Scared:
It’s not a particularly special song, but it’s got a catchy tune, the duo’s singing was fine and stage performance wasn’t bad. At least it’s a pop song, a friend of mine said.
Oh, and before you get me wrong about the above. Last year’s winning song was written by a US-Danish song writer duo (Julie Frost and John Gordon), and “Germany won”. Anyway, I’m happy for the two singers; and to me the fact that Jamal lives in London, isn’t as significant as some people make it out to be. It just shows a continued expression of globalisation. This doesn’t mean the Eurovision Song Contest has outlived its time; rather it is much more an event relevant of our time than completely irrelevant, as some people believe.

I somewhat agree – they were _different_. However, I guess the point my friend was trying to make was that after last year’s slightly more quirky pop song (Lena’s Satellite), this year we are back to a more ‘Eurovision’ pop ballad.
