As a previous blogger has already pointed out, Cambridge is a musical city. There are numerous musical societies organising hundreds of concerts each year and so I thought that maybe the readers of this blog might be interested in a local service that can help combat one of the administrative problems of organising a concert: hiring the music.
Christ’s College and Homerton College run a music hire scheme that loans music sets to societies both within the University and in the wider community. Each College handles their collection in different ways but by sharing the same terms and conditions and uploading our collection on a separate online catalogue, we can work together to advertise and promote the service.
Christ’s music collection is quite traditional and has been developed through generous donations. Items include Mozart concertos, Bach cantatas and orchestral works by Vaughn Williams. Homerton’s collection which has been built up over a number of years is a little more diverse, with music from Harry Potter and 100 carols for choirs as well as arias and overtures.
We pride ourselves on having a friendly and effective service. The service is free to members of Christ’s and Homerton, with competitive rates charged to all others. Items can be reserved and the length of the loan is flexible and negotiable to fit in with concert dates.
For enquiries contact Liz Osman (eo272) at Homerton or Charlotte Byrne (cab98) at Christ’s. Visit http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/current-students/library/music-hire/ to browse our catalogue.
